About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Today we are going to show you the Thule Raceway platform style two bike carrier, part number TH9003. To mount the Raceway on your vehicle, check the instructions for the proper fit dial setting. On our Jetta we need to be at number 7. The rack will sit on the trunk of the vehicle. The top two cables are going to hook to the trunk lid by the rear windshield. The bottom two cables will hook to the lower lip of the trunk lid. Once the rack is centered, you can use the knobs on the end of the rack to tighten up the cables. The trays on this rack will telescope out to accommodate bikes of varying lengths. Undo the latch and slide the tray out to fit your bike. Once the proper length is set, simply close the latch and the tray is locked in place. The arms of the rack will come down and clamp on to the top tube of the frame. Today we are going to show you part number A30901 from SportRack. This is their 2 bicycle rack designed for 1 1/4 inch receivers and 2 inch receiver hitches. Now for the 1 1/4 inch receiver it does have to be a class 2 hitch. First up we have to install it on our 2 inch receiver hitch. Instead of a hitch pin it comes with a bolt. You pull this pin out and it just unscrews like a normal bolt. Then you just slide it in aligning the holes before you reinstall the bolt. You go ahead and tighten it down with a 3/4 inch wrench. This bolt acts like a anti rattle device that makes the entire thing one solid assembly now. Okay once we have our bolt installed we will install our safety pin just to make sure if it comes loose it will not come all the way out. A second bike is what we are going to put on next. Notice that the second bike is a smaller frame then the first bike so that you can see the adjustability of the bike rack. The ability to adjust the 2 separate hooks to fit the different frames is a pretty handy thing. You put the wheels in the wheel wells first then make any adjustments that you need to before pulling your hook over and locking it into place. Revolutionary Trunk Mount Carrier Design

The stylish Thule 9002 Raceway 3-Bike Trunk Mount Carrier represents a revolutionary new rack concept that merges premium features of a hitch rack with an incredible ease of storage. The Raceway 9002 secures to your vehicle via Sure-Tight high strength cable attachments that provide a hold that is much better than anything possible with straps. Once the rack is securely mounted on your vehicle loading bikes is easy. The Raceway 9002 holds 3 bicycles securing each via the combination of narrow cradles arms with bike straps atop the carrier's bike arms and no-sway cages that attach to your bike frame's main vertical tube. Once bikes are secured with these two elements an included strap is run through the bike(s) to secure their lower halves to the frame of the Raceway 2002. When bikes are removed, the upper arms of the Raceway 9002 fold down inline with the main body of the rack at the release of a few levers allowing for a more streamlined shape and easier driving and parking abilities.

Two-way Locking for Security

Once you get your bicycle rack unpacked from the box, these will be the pieces you'll end up with. The shank assembly that will slide into the hitch. Which will come with a 2 inch adapter if you have a 2 inch receiver hitch, it will come with the body of the bicycle carrier with 3 arms on it, the wheel mounts and two clamps that will hold the bikes down to the bicycle rack. We'll go ahead and start assembling the rack first off to see how it works. First off we're going to start with the shank, in this case we are going to use the 2 inch adapter for the 2 inch receiver hitch. Once you have that shank installed into the hitch, next thing is you want to install the pin that holds it in place to keep from moving around. Once you have the shank installed lets go ahead and install the main body that will hold the rest of the rack up. We'll grab that part and the two bolts that hold that in place. Next what we'll do is install the clamps onto the racks that will hold the bikes down. Depending on the bicycle frame you may have to flip them around or upside down, front to rear to accommodate the frames of your bikes. We'll put them on in the generic pattern today. Next step is to extend the outriggers or the arms, all you have to do is pull out the two pins and fold them down flat. The arms are out, now we install the pins in their new positions. The Thule 961XT Speedway 2-Bike Trunk Rack has a two bicycle carrying capacity and a new improved design that greatly increases its number of possible vehicle fits. It also utilizes Thule's easy-to-use, patented FitDial for the perfect fit to your vehicle exterior, quick installation and an exclusive push-button feature for folding down bike arms so they are out of your way when not in use. This bicycle rack features Thule's T3 Cradles that lock down bikes and cradles while still allowing complete adjustment along the bike arm, and No-Sway Cages that control bike movement to keep your bicycles from colliding, and are removable for ease of use. Simple No-Sway, No-Hassle Features

Bike trunk mount carriers do not require a rack, are easy to install and offer easy access to bikes. It quickly secures to trunk and/or hatchback seams with multiple straps just like other carriers in its class, but also contains unique setup features. The first of these is a wing adjustment knob and FitDial combo with recommended numerical positions for specific vehicles. This limits the trial and error in how the carrier should lay against your vehicle. Once this optimal fit position is confirmed it is locked into place with easy to turn wing adjustment knobs. Then there is the one-button connection feature for carrier arms, allowing for instantaneous installation, removal and twisting of the arms to the side, then down and out of the way for parking situations with the carrier on, but empty of bikes. Most impressive though is the No-Sway cage feature. Attaching and extending below each of the T3 cradles that support your bike frame and attach to the carrier arms, these dramatically reduce bike frame movement front-to-back and side-to-side.
